Let’s continue our vegetable gardening journey into June!

NO PLANTING June 1-2, June 9-11, or June 28-29! Killing signs.

According to Planting By The Signs, June 7-8 and June 17-20 are the best days to plant above-ground crops like tomatoes, peppers, or squash. Below-ground crops should be planted on June 3-4, June 26-27, and June 30-July 1.

June 6 is great day to plant bean or peas — moon in Gemini.

If you see a snake, leave it alone. Let it pass or go about your business in another location.

Many people have a gut reaction to snakes that usually ends up bad for the snakes.

As you know, snakes are beneficial for the most part. They eat rodents, insects, amphibians, and reptiles but they also eat bird eggs.

Snakes are preyed upon by owls, hawks, and some mammals.

Master Gardener Updates

Applications for the 2024 Master Gardener (MG) training will be available June 15. They can be picked up at our office or downloaded from our website (it’s rather lengthy).

Classroom sessions for the MG program begin September 6 with the rest of the sessions being held on specific Fridays in September, October, and November (see website for more info).

There will be a $75 fee for the training. If you have a financial hardship that would make paying the fee difficult, help is available.

The pictures to the right are pictures of the Native and Heirloom Fest held on May 4. We had a wonderful crowd show up to take part in the birdhouse contest voting, plant shopping, and information gathering. We appreciate everyone who came and hope to host another one next year.

Summer happenings with the Lake Cumberland Master Gardeners include tidying up vegetable/herb demonstration beds, cut flower bed, and dye gardens. They’re also planning some field trips this summer.

MGs also sell pine straw on Fridays from 9am to 3pm. A new truckload arrived in late May so there’s plenty for your landscaping needs.
